The Clone Wars S5 Sneak Peek: Clone Commander Thorn
Reported by Justin on 14 May 2012 18:21

Need a little pick-me-up this Monday? How about a sneak peek of a new Clone from the upcoming The Clone Wars Season 5?

Take a look at Clone Commander Thorn, brought to us by Dave Filoni on his Facebook page!

On behalf of the Clone Wars crew, we would like to congratulate Marvel Studios and Joss Whedon on the incredible release of The Avengers. We’re also very proud of the team at ILM who made the effects and action scenes beyond spectacular. There are many fans of Marvel comics on the Clone Wars crew, and the biggest fan of all has to be episodic director Steward Lee. Knowing what a fan he is, I sketched up a special Clone Commander for an upcoming episode of Season 5. Clone Commander Thorn is obviously our homage to “Thor, the god of thunder.” Commander Thorn even carries a Z-6 blaster canon named “the Hammer.” Enjoy this sneak peak at a new clone from Season 5.

Star Wars Celebration VI : Behind the Scenes of the Cantina
Reported by Mark on 14 May 2012 11:12

More event news from the team over at Celebration VI regarding the event of the summer in O'Lando.

We were warned that "this place can be a little rough," but Star Wars fans can't help going back to the Mos Eisley Cantina over and over again. Celebration VI offers an in-depth exploration on the infamous watering hole from the original Star Wars, which includes some never before seen behind-the-scenes photos and artifacts from the creature-filled bar.

Professional sculptor and effects artist Tom Spina, who was inspired by the astounding creatures in the film, has made it his mission to uncover and chronicle the history of this beloved scene, its characters and the artists responsible for its creation. Spina has tracked the whereabouts of original cantina props and masks, rare photos, and even notes and illustrations from the production. As a young artist, Spina learned to sculpt by re-creating the Star Wars aliens that inspired him. This year, he and his talented crew at Tom Spina Designs helped recreate the cantina for its memorable appearance in Volkswagen's 2012 Super Bowl Commercial.

Spina will join Star Wars expert Pablo Hidalgo on the Behind-the-Scenes stage to discuss his research, show his creations, and reveal new secrets about the cantina. This panel is a must-see for fans of the original movie, creature effects enthusiasts, as well as those always seeking to learn something new about Star Wars.

Look for more great programming updates for the Celebration VI Behind-the-Scenes Stage, as well as the many other exciting and entertaining stages, on StarWars.com and www.starwarscelebration.com, coming soon!

Empire Strikes Backstage: Intimate pictures of cast and crew
Reported by Mark on 14 May 2012 10:09

How do you follow up the biggest movie of all time (a question we're sure will soon be on the lips of Joss Whedon)? Back in 1979 George Lucas and the crew of The Empire Strikes Back had the same problem, and The Daily Mail have unearthed this treasure trove of images that highlight the fun and frivolity that was had backstage. Sure, it was hard work, but as these images show it doesn't have to be all sturm and drang.

The cast and crew of The Empire Strikes Back faced a daunting task - how to follow Star Wars, the blockbuster which had reinvented science fiction on the silver screen overnight and instantly become the favourite film of millions of cinemagoers.

By the time it opened in 1980, the pressure was really on director George Lucas and his team of actors to deliver, but as these fantastic pictures illustrate they all found time to enjoy themselves in the process.

Ahead of an upcoming convention in Florida in August, which is expected to attract up to 30,000 buffs, here is a chance to see behind the scenes during the making of the second film.

All the stars, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher can be seen laughing and joking in and around the many sets and with a lot of the characters in costume.

"George Lucas Does Something Likeable For a Change: Revenge on Rich Neighbors"
Reported by Mark on 14 May 2012 09:43

Just to clarify it's their headline, not ours. On the day of his birthday it's very cool to report that Star Wars supremo George Lucas has absolutely knocked it out of the park with this awesome story. Read on, raise a glass to the great man and smile, smile, smile

So what is George Lucas going to do with his property now that he's tired of his rich neighbors putting up a not-in-my-backyard stink? He wants to transform the property into low-income housing, naturally, ending their official statement with this zinger, "If everyone feels that housing is less impactful on the land, then we are hoping that people who need it the most will benefit."

He's working with the Marin Community Foundation to instead construct affordable housing for either low-income families or seniors living on small, fixed incomes. In order to smooth along the development, he's already given them all of the pricey technical studies and land surveys Lucasfilm spent years conducting. And we think that's just great. Because if there's one thing rich people will hate more than having movie magic made in their backyard, it's poor people moving in.

Mr. Lucas, we may hate you for turning your back on the original trilogy, but our hat is off to you on this one. Well played.

"LOOGIE LEIA"
Reported by Justin on 10 May 2012 19:53

Growing up, I was a huge fan of the Garbage Pail Kids series of trading cards/stickers. I cannot begin to imagine how much of my allowance was spent at my local cards & gift store in an attempt to collect 'em all as each new series was released. And the trades that took place on the schoolyard playground each day during recess...well those are just too numerous to even begin to quantify.

So when I received an email from Jedi News reader Nathan S. earlier today containing a pic of this "LOOGIE LEIA" sketch, I just had to share it with you. This whimsical depiction of a Star Wars themed Garbage Pail Kid was created by artist Luis Diaz and is sure to bring back a rush of fond memories to those fans who are old enough to remember the GPK trading cards series.

In addition to "LOOGIE LEIA", Luis also sketched an Indiana Jones themed GPK entitled "INDIANA STONED".

Big thanks to Nathan for the heads up!

Custom Darth Knight 6" Action Figure
Reported by Justin on 10 May 2012 17:12

Remember this Bat Vader pic we posted last month? Pretty cool huh?

Well how about taking this mash-up design to the next level in say...oh I don't know, action figure form?

The extremely talented customizers at Mint Condition Customs have done just that.

Darth Knight has been created using the body from a Dark Knight Movie Masters Batman figure, and the head, lightsaber, chest plate, and other pieces from a Star Wars Transformers Darth Vader action figure.

I transplanted the ears from the Batman head onto the Darth Vader head, and sculpted over them to blend them in with the sculpt of Vader’s helmet. He features a paint job that really helps him stand out as his own concept, with silver accents, and other various parts painted in flat and gloss black.

He has extra Darth Vader pieces attached to his belt, his chest plate has been implanted into Batman’s torso (and he still retains full ab crunch movement!), and his legs have been sculpted over with rectangular plates. He also features the classic Darth Vader waist cloak made from a sheet of vinyl. He comes with his lightsaber as well (or light baton if you wish for him to be as non-lethal as the real caped crusader). He’s based on the costume design by Malmey Studios, but with my own unique flairs thrown in.

One word: AWESOME

New Stormtrooper Baseball Jersey at ThinkGeek
Reported by Justin on 10 May 2012 14:25

With the 2012 Major League Baseball season in full swing, ThinkGeek has released a new Stormtrooper Baseball Jersey to add to your sporting apparel collection. Check out the product details below and then click here to place your order.

After a long discussion, there were several options for the name of the Death Star's official baseball team. The Death Stars, Vader's Fist, Fightin' Helmets, and Droid Destroyers were among the final cut. Which is to say, there really weren't any good ideas. Finally, someone said, "Why don't we just call ourselves the Troopers and go to the canteen for some penne arrabbiata?" And so it was.

This white baseball jersey with black details has Troopers in the swoosh font across the front with the number 77 (Star Wars release date) in black. On the lower right side there's a tone-on-tone Stormtrooper screened on the fabric. The sleeves feature black stripes and the Imperial logo on the left sleeve. The back has the number 77 huge in black. 60% cotton / 40% polyester. Turn inside-out to wash in cold water.

Prefer the hardcourt to the diamond? Don't forget about their Stormtrooper Basketball Jersey we reported on earlier.

Jeremy Bulloch Attending the 19th SFBall 8th - 10th February 2013
Reported by Mark on 09 May 2012 18:07

One of the absolute treasures of the UK sci-fi convention calendar is the annual SFBall, an event that is now in it's 19th year.

Held every February in Bournemouth on the south coast it's a three-day celebration of everything geek. In years past Star Wars guests such as Jerome Blake and Richard LeParmentier have graced the Ball and for many years their patron was the much-missed and legendary Michael Sheard, better known as Admiral Ozzel from The Empire Strikes Back.

Since Michael's passing the event has benefitted from the patronage of Boba Fett himself Jeremy Bulloch and we're pleased to confirm that Jeremy will be attending SFBall 19 on the weekend of the 8th to the 10th February 2013.

Jedi News can't recommend this event highly enough. SFBall 19 features some amazing guests to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Armin Shimmerman, Max Grodenchik, Kitty Swink and Lolita Fatjo have been confirmed, with more guests to follow. So, do yourselves a favour and click here to book tickets to one of the warmest, friendliest and fun weekends of the year.

Reported by Mark on 09 May 2012 17:00

Our good buddy Jared Kirby has very kindly sent through this review of Nick Gillards Combat Con event in Las Vegas last summer. It gives a very clear view of what happens at the events, and exactly how much fun is to be had learning the Jedi arts from one of the men who choreographed and designed the moves. Over to participant Clair Miller.

"Last summer my husband and I had the opportunity to attend Combat Con in Las Vegas (Combat Con). There was such a large variety of classes and events going on, but one in particular caught our eye; "Jedi Fighting" with Kyle Rowling and Nick Gillard. Being fans of the lightsaber fights from all of the prequel movies, a chance to take a class with the 'master' behind them all was truly a great opportunity we would not want to miss. We weren't entirely sure what the class was going to entail, but have always been so interested in the behind the scenes development of fight choreography, that whatever we took away from the class would be worth it.

At first we thought we would be able to watch them show some of the moves from the fight scene of 'Revenge of the Sith' but we ended up all being able to pick up practice lightsabers and to learn a bit ourselves! We would learn some moves and have Nick and Kyle call us each up one-on-one to practice the bit of the scene we had learned with them.

Mr. Gillard and Mr. Rowling were wonderful teachers, and incredibly patient with everyone, even those who weren't always picking it up very quickly. If you did it well, they were quick to compliment, and if it wasnt quite right they would easily correct and explain how to improve it. My husband and I would both highly suggest that anyone with an interest in Star Wars or fight choreography in general should come to Combat Con and make this course a priority."

SW.com Replaces The Clone Wars CVI Fett Image
Reported by Justin on 08 May 2012 13:31

Hmmm, looks like somebody over at Lucasfilm may have spilled the beans a little bit prematurely last week. Remember this story where we were given a glimpse of what appears to be animated Boba Fett armor from The Clone Wars series?

Well, that image has now been replaced, as the SW.com CVI Boba Fett story has been updated with a stock image of Boba from the vintage OT days.

Was this a slip-up on the part of Lucasfilm? Sure appears that way to me. In any event, let's just hope we are in fact treated to some animated Fett action at Celebration VI.

Marvel Avengers Assembled Figures Adjusted Upwards
Reported by Mark on 08 May 2012 00:05

In a very brief update to the piece we posted on Sunday about Marvel Avengers Assemble, Box Office Mojo have updated their figures and amazingly the film has taken more than the estimated amount of $200,300,000, raking in $207,438,708 in North America for a worldwide total of $654,838,708 in a mere 12 days.

Surely the film is well on course to smash the $1 billion dollar barrier and pull in at least $1.5 billion. Or are we underselling it? With the golden word-of-mouth the film is receiving could it be the film to topple Avatar?

Jedi church founder thrown out of Tesco for refusing to remove his hood
Reported by Mark on 06 May 2012 21:10

Daniel Jones, founder of the Jedi Church has been thrown out of a Tesco in bangor, Wales for not removing his hood. Jones, who claims to have 500,000 followers around the world, claims to have been left 'emotionally damaged'.

'It states in our Jedi doctrination that I can wear headwear. It just covers the back of my head. You have a choice of wearing headwear in your home or at work but you have to wear a cover for your head when you are in public.

They said: "Take it off", and I said "No, its part of my religion. It's part of my religious right." I gave them a Jedi church business card. They weren't listening to me. They wasted my personal time. They were rude and not very nice to me. They had three people around me. It was intimidating.

It was discrimination. They were making a joke against me. I was really upset. Nobody should be treated like that. We have 500,000 members in our church. It is a religion founded in Wales with a scripture and ceremonies'

For their part supermarket giants Tesco had this to say.

'He hasn't been banned. Jedis are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all appeared hoodless without ever going over to the Dark Side and we are only aware of the Emperor as one who never removed his hood.

If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they'll miss lots of special offers.'

"Hulk Smash Puny Box Office!"
Reported by Mark on 06 May 2012 19:53

It's the film that practically everyone has been talking about, the film that practically everyone loves and judging by the unbelievable box office figure it's just racked up the film everyone has gone to see this weekend in North America and Canada.

Marvel Avengers Assemble has absolutely obliterated the previous three-day record of $169,189,427 held by last years excellent Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two by bringing in an estimated $200,300,000 since it's US release at midnight on 4th May. With a worldwide haul of $641,800,000 it's (Hulk) smashed a number of records. It became the fastest to $100 million, $150 million and $200 million, a benchmark it managed in a puny three days compared to The Dark Knights five days, nabbed 82.7% of the market share, second only to Spider-Man 3's 83.3%. It took both the all-time biggest opening weekend and all-time biggest adjusted as well as the biggest Saturday haul of $69,700,000 and the biggest Sunday, $50,100,000.

If you haven't seen it go now. It's a marvel (pun intended), showcases some truly stunning ILM effects and simply put is two and a half hours of pure unadulterated geek heaven. Congratulations to all involved on this colossal success.

IGN Details Their SWTOR Playable Races Wishlist
Reported by Justin on 06 May 2012 16:52

From IGN:

The Star Wars universe is massive. Aside from the six films, there are umpteen books, games and comics that are officially part of the canon. The sheer scope of the mythology makes it rather hard to accurately prophecy what might be coming for Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWtOR) in future updates but it does give us more than ample scope for some wild speculation and wishful thinking.

SWtOR runs with a hybrid approach to races – rather than simply taking an "equal and opposite" approach like World of Warcraft or a straight universal approach in which any faction can employ any playable race, it instead merges the two approaches, with races that cross the faction divide as well as species that are unique (outside of Legacy rewards) to the faction. We've taken a similar approach to come up with these suggestions for races we'd love to see incorporated into the game.

Life on Hoth LEGO Style
Reported by Justin on 06 May 2012 16:34

Admit it - you love LEGO Star Wars minifigures. They're cute, whimsical, and cool to collect. But did you know these little guys are also tough as nails?

How tough you ask? How about tough enough to brave the extreme elements on the icy snow planet known as Hoth?

Check out the article posted on io9:

Opportunities for skiing aside, life on Hoth can be brutal. The planet features little life (and some of that life wants to eat you), and if you're separated from your home base and your tauntauns, you're likely in for an icy death. The dramatic Lego scenes capture the highs and lows of life on the snowy Star Wars planet.

Vesa Lehtimäki creates these action scenes, which rise above most toy photography. There's life in his little Lego men — sometimes sad or terrified life, sometimes routine or even amused life. Hey, he even managed to get Darth Vader to go skiing, albeit without his helmet. Vader should really watch out for those rocky patches beneath the powder.

Why Margaret Thatcher Is Responsible For Today
Reported by Mark on 04 May 2012 21:02

Back in 1979 when she was elected Britains first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher enjoyed the admiration of the British public. While that would change somewhat over the following decade, she was indirectly responsible for this very day.

Yes, it turns out that today's stand-out phrase originated back when the Iron Lady was elected to office. The London Evening Standard printed 'Congratulations Maggie, May the 4th be with you!'

Further to that, it was later brought up in Parliament and almost caused a researcher his job.

Mr. Deputy Speaker (Mr. Geoffrey Lofthouse) : Order. I can assure the hon. Gentleman that that is not uncommon in this place, whatever is supposed to happen.

Mr. Cohen : Thank you, Mr. Deputy Speaker. If that point of order was an allusion to me, I can tell the hon. Gentleman that I was here for the opening speeches, and for some of the speeches that followed.

May the fourth is an appropriate date for a defence debate. My researcher, who is a bit of a wit, said that it should be called national star wars day. He was talking about the film "Star Wars" rather than President Reagan's defence fantasy, and he added, "May the fourth be with you." That is a very bad joke ; he deserves the sack for making it, but he is a good researcher.

Bravo that man, and at the risk of being repetitive - May the fourth be with you!

Is this what I think it is - an animated suit of Boba Fett armor from The Clone Wars?

Sure looks that way to me!!

Star Wars actor Anthony Daniels joins forces with Scalextric
Reported by Mark on 04 May 2012 19:44

Anyone born in the 60's and 70's will absolutely flip for this, a mash-up of coolness to rival Star Wars and ponies. Scalextrix has joined forces with Star Wars to bring us sets of Scalextrix beginning in June 2012.

Goldenrod himself Anthony Daniels said "I had a thrilling Scalextric set when I was a child and it’s great to see the brand is now stronger than ever. The launch of this exciting new range takes Scalextric and Star Wars deeper into that ever-expanding galaxy. Fans will jump to lightspeed to get behind the controls of this one!"

Next month, Scalextric releases the first ever products from its three-year global licensing partnership with Star Wars TM, the most successful film series of all time.

Joining forces with Scalextric to celebrate this momentous occasion, British Star Wars TM actor, Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) said, “I had a thrilling Scalextric set when I was a child and it’s great to see the brand is now stronger than ever. The launch of this exciting new range takes Scalextric and Star Wars deeper into that ever-expanding galaxy. Fans will jump to lightspeed to get behind the controls of this one!

The Scalextric products available from June 2012 include Micro Scalextric set called Death Star Attack featuring X-Wing TM vs TIE Fighter TM. A pursuit battle game, on a 3.8m length circuit, with glow-in-the-dark track and illuminated starfighters!

Also available is the Battle of Endor, a Scalextric Start set featuring Luke Skywalker TM vs Biker Scout TM. Speeder Bikes piloted by Luke Skywalker and a Scout Trooper race around the 4.3m printed Endor forest scene track and duck through the hazards; depicting the famous scene from Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi TM movie.

Paul Chandler, Marketing Manager at Scalextric, commented: “We have worked on the Scalextric-Star Wars project for over two years now and we are delighted with the products we have created, working in close partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. The combination of the incredible Scalextric slot racing system together with the iconic characters and vehicles from Star Wars TM is truly unique. And together, the Force is even stronger!”

Individual, highly detailed versions of the Speeder Bikes (C3299 Luke Skywalker TM and C3298 PaplooTM the Ewok TM), with additional electronic light effects and alternative decoration features, are also available later this year.

Stormtrooper Bike Built by Fan
Reported by Mark on 04 May 2012 17:37

There are a galaxy of dedicated Star Wars fans, many of whom show their love for Star Wars by building, crafting and trooping their fandom. But this bike is a bit special, a vehicle fit for any officer in the Imperial Army.

We’re celebrating May 4th, the unofficial world Star Wars day – "May the fourth be with you", get it? – with this amazing tribute. The Phat Stormtrooper is the work of Russian sci-fi fan Max Denislov (aka Dee Troy), from Moscow's Rastabike BC.

A designer by trade, Max decided to start the bike as a tribute to George Lucas and Star Wars. He'd previously built a custom Felt Ghost Rider, which can be seen here. The Phat Stormtrooper is based on a Phat Cycles Stretch Delux cruiser frame. Max drew the bike up using graphic design programs, created 3D models, cut the shapes from polyurethane foam and then made them using fibreglass and resin.

The amount of detail on the bike is incredible, from the custom chain guard, mudguards, valve caps and headlight, to the specially designed fork crown (a set of standard forks was widened from 90mm to 130mm to accommodate the broad tyres and styled from an image Max saw on a Star Wars poster).

Win Two 4-Day Passes to Star Wars Celebration VI
Reported by Justin on 04 May 2012 13:02

Posted by Eric Goldman over at IGN:

If you’ve been to Star Wars Celebration before, you know the convention offers a ton to see and do for Star Wars fans. And if you haven’t been yet, well, hopefully you can make it to Celebration VI this summer in August!

Lucasfilm has provided me with two four-day passes to Star Wars Celebration VI to give away, which will get you into every day of the convention, from August 23rd to August 26th. I’ll be choosing one winner to get both passes, so you'll have one for yourself and can bring along one other lucky person! But of course, I’m looking for a big Star Wars fan...

In the comments below, let me know who your favorite Star Wars character is and why. The winner will be chosen randomly on Friday, May 25th (if you’re a Star Wars fan, you know the significance of that date!). Make sure you check your IGN wall to see if you won between May 25th and Wednesday, June 4th. If the winner has not claimed their prize by the end of June 4th, I'll be choosing someone else!

Here's a cool piece via our friends over at the Star Wars Prequel Appreciation Society about a clash of two very fun celebrations.

May the York Be With You
Reported by StephenG on 03 May 2012 14:22

Looks like a lot of fun for a great cause is to be had in York on Friday.

A Star Wars themed event – May The Fourth Be With You – is being held at a York pub in aid of young cancer patients.

Staff and customers at the Derwent Arms in Osbaldwick will don Yoda and Princess Leia costumes at tomorrow’s casino night in aid of the Neuroblastomabn Society, which fundraises to fight the rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer.

It is hoped some of the funds raised will also go towards brave Kelfield youngster Jamie Inglis, who has suffered a neuroblastoma relapse and has undergone surgery to have a tumour that causedparalysis removed from his spine.

The six-year-old’s family are now working to raise as much as £250,000 to pay for lifesaving relapse treatment with experts in Germany.

Sue King, the landlady of the Derwent Arms, said about the fundraising: “I don’t think a lot of people know about the Neuroblastoma Society charity, children tend to get missed out.

Have fun folks and raise some money huh?

You may have heard of this project a while back when it was in it's infancy. Drew:The Man Behind The Poster is almost complete, but funding has run dry and now film maker Erik P Sharkey has turned to Indiegogo and the generosity of Struzan fans to see the project home. Over to Erik.

Drew Struzan Doc Needs Completion Funds

My name is Erik P Sharkey. I have been making films since I was a child and always dreamed of being a filmmaker. I have sank every dollar I had and money I didn't have to make a Documentary titled Drew:The Man Behind The Poster about my favorite Illustrator Drew Struzan. His artwork for films such as Star Wars, Back To The Future, and Indiana Jones sparked my imagination as a child and I want to share my love for his work with the world.

Along with my partners Greg Boas and Charles Ricciardi we have been able to film amazing all new interviews with George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. We have done this out of our own pocket with our own time. But the money has totally run out. We need your help to finish this film that will honor one of our finest Illustrators. Please help us with the completion funds we need and support truly independent filmmakers..

Reported by Justin on 02 May 2012 18:37

The Empire is here to lend a helping hand when cracking open your favorite ice cold beverage.

Check out this cool new Death Star Bottle Opener available from Entertainment Earth:

That's no moon! That's a fully armed and operational bottle opener! Cast in solid metal, this Death Star opener features all the detail of the famous Imperial battle station from Star Wars, but at four inches in diameter it fits in the palm of your hand, and the small exhaust port opens bottles with ease. Plus, a magnet on the back allows it to hang ominously on your refrigerator! The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of applied force! Comes packaged in a collector's case with a full-color wrap.

Loki: "It’s kind of like he’s Anakin Skywalker."
Reported by Mark on 02 May 2012 10:44

Tom Hiddleston, the actor who plays Loki in the frankly magnificent Marvel Avengers Assemble (which I saw last night and is everything a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society could wish for: funny, exciting, tragic, epic) has been interviewed by the good folks over at Aint it Cool about the character, the film and his involvement in future movies, specifically Thor 2.

Interestingly, Hiddleston likened Loki to a couple of very famous Star Wars villains:

Tom Hiddleston: What’s so fascinating about Loki is that he is constantly and has done, for the history of the comic books and the history of the Norse mythology, he is constantly dancing on a tight rope, which swings between darkness and redemption and it’s no secret that in AVENGERS he is indulging and yielding to his darkest instincts. What fascinates me about the future of the character is if he can swing back and when and how. I don’t know that it will ever happen in THOR 2, because I haven’t seen a script, but I think that spiritual flexibility in him is really the most fascinating aspect of his characterization and one has to ask “Can he be forgiven by Thor and Odin for what he does?” “Can he accept forgiveness?” “Has he gone to the dark side forever?” It’s kind of like he’s Anakin Skywalker in that way. I mean I’ve only just thought that, but there’s that sort of like

The Kidd: Where anything could set him in one direction of the other.

Tom Hiddleston: Yeah, but I honestly don’t know if he’s headed towards Emperor Palpatine or the way that he somehow has a glimmer of redemption in him.

The Kidd That old Anakin Skywalker where after they take the helmet off.

Tom Hiddleston: I mean I would be honored if… Darth Vader is the greatest villain in cinematic history, so I’m not suggesting that I’m even at that level, but just psychologically that’s an interesting place to play.

A tidbit from Tim Zahn's Scoundrels
Reported by Mark on 02 May 2012 09:41

Timothy Zahn brings us another tantalising snippet of his forthcoming Han Solo story Scoundrels. Here we have Han and Lando catching up on old times.

Han thought about denying it. But unfortunately, it was the truth. “So what have you been up to lately?”

“Not much,” Lando said, waving a hand vaguely. “Winning some, losing some. You?”

Han shrugged.

"I picked up some crazy passengers, rescued a princess, fought stormtroopers and TIE fighters, helped save the galaxy, and got my reward snatched right off my ship by pirates. “Not much,” he said aloud. “Why are YOU here?”

Don't forget, we're currently three-quarters of the way through our very own Lando Calrissian story Queen of Air and Darkness right here at Jedi News. Here's the links to the first three chapters:

UPDATE: Home Bargains Offer Classic Star Wars Figures
Reported by Mark on 01 May 2012 17:00

Jedi News reader Alan Reaney very kindly sent us this heads up regarding Home Bargains stores here in the UK.

It would appear Home Bargain stores have managed to get their hands on a large amount of Star Wars figures it seems to vary from store to store but they have a large amount of POTF2, Expanded Universe, POTJ, Saga accessory sets and figure and cup sets all priced at £3.99 ideal for anybody looking to plug some gaps in their collection or just for troop building

UPDATE: Jedi News reader Mark Tackley sent us this update regarding more vintage era figures showing up in UK stores.

Just to add to your Home Bargains Offer Classic Star Wars Figures article, I was in Milton Kynes on Saturday and i noticed the Toy Entertainer had a few of the EP2 and pre EP2 gold striped figures in there some of them looked like they had Spanish stickers on them.

What job would you have in the Star Wars universe?
Reported by Mark on 01 May 2012 16:45

At one time we've all dreamt about a life in the galaxy far, far away. But if you were able to hop onto a Star Tours cruise to the Star Wars galaxy, what would you be?

I've always fancied myself a dashing, heroic smuggler. You might prefer to be a Sith apprentice, an Ewok chief or Jabba's Slave Girl.

Life in the Background: Craig Stratton, Nikto in The Phantom Menace
Reported by Mark on 01 May 2012 16:40

Just as there are endless stories set in the fictional Star Wars universe there are a thousand stories about the actual making of the Star Wars universe. Here's a fascinating piece about the man who played one of the Nikto guards in The Phantom Menace, Craig Stratton.

I got the call to be an alien in Star Wars, The Phantom Menace, Episode 1. As you can imagine, it was a boyhood dream come true. Whatever I was going to be doing that week could quite frankly wait. I remember going to the costume fitting with three other guys and seeing row after row of incredible hand made masks and characters that we recognised form the original films. We were like kids in a candy store. One of us spotted Greedo and we all made a bee-line like crazy children to try on Greedo’s head. “I wanna be Greedo… I wanna be Greedo!!” The head just didn’t fit me and I was so disappointed. I mean, you would be too, right? I was allocated the mask of a new character, a Nikto (who were a reptilian humanoid species from the planet Kintan in the Si’Klaata Cluster, for all you nerds out there).

There’s a lot of hanging around on set so much time was spent along the large corridors of Leavesden Studios on roller skates that a friend had brought along.

The biggest memory for me on Star Wars was wondering around a packed canteen one afternoon for lunch and finding the last seat in the dining hall next to a girl who I spent the next 45 minutes or so chatting. I was still wearing my costume, but without alien mask and gloves, and she asked me which character I was playing in the film, to which I answered rather proudly “…a Nikto” Of course I politely returned the question to which she replied ” Queen Amidala….”
